Since 1990, charity shops in England and Wales have benefited from 80 per cent rate relief. Billing authorities may also offer a further 20 per cent discretionary relief.
This rate relief has facilitated the third sector’s ability to deliver many key services which communities rely upon. Many of the animal welfare services delivered by the Society in Wales benefit from this reduction, which, in turn, takes strain away from other public sector budgets.
Given this, RSPCA Cymru voiced deep concern at the wide-ranging impact which Welsh Government proposals for curbing rate relief for charities in Wales could have on the nation’s communities.
We welcome the apparent decision not to proceed with cutting rate relief, and will continue to champion the benefits this relief provides animal welfare, the third sector more broadly and, consequently, Wales’ communities.
